Algeria: inflation rate at 2.7% over one year in July 2019

The evolution of consumer prices in annual rate of Algeria was 2.7% until July 2019, learned the APS from the National Office of Statistics (ONS).

The evolution of annual consumer prices up to July 2019, which is the average annual inflation rate calculated taking into account the 12 months, from August 2018 to July 2019, compared to the period between from August 2017 to July 2018.

As for the monthly change in consumer prices, which is the raw index of consumer prices in July 2019 compared to June of the same year, it saw a slight drop of -0.7%, according to the data. of the ONS.

In terms of monthly change and by product category, food commodity prices were down 2.44% last July from the previous month.

This decline is caused, in particular, by a decrease of 4.92% in fresh agricultural product prices, the ONS specifies.

Indeed, this monthly change in the prices of fresh agricultural products is mainly explained by a fall in the prices of fruits and vegetables, which fell by 34.1% and 3.8% respectively, compared to the month of June.

On the other hand, price increases mainly concerned chickens (+ 5.4%), red meats (+ 0.9%) and eggs (+ 5.3%).

Prices for industrial food products (agri-food), they recorded a relative stagnation last July, according to the same source.

In the case of manufactured goods, they increased slightly by 1.0%, while services stagnated.

By group of goods and services, the increase in prices mainly affected education, culture and recreation (+1.8), clothing and footwear, and furniture and home furnishings (+ 0.1%).

The miscellaneous group also saw a 2.7% increase, while the rest was generally stagnant.

In the first seven months of 2019, overall consumer prices increased by almost 1.90% compared to the same period of 2018, according to the ONS.

This upward trend affected all product categories, with the exception of food products (-0.28%) and fresh agricultural products, which fell by 2.3%.

Industrial food products were up 1.77%, manufactured goods up 3.97% and services up 3.19%.

As a reminder, Algeria’s inflation rate reached 4.3% in 2018.
