« Belt and the Silk Road »: Algeria has become China’s 5th largest African trading partner

Algeria and China have led, as part of the joint construction of « The Belt and the Silk Road », « fruitful » cooperation, making Algeria the 5th largest African trading partner of China, said the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, in Algiers, Li Lianhe.

 In an interview with the national daily « Le Jeune Indépendant », published in its Wednesday edition, Mr. Li Lianhe pointed out that « in recent years, as part of the joint construction of + the Belt and the Silk Road +, China and Algeria have conducted successful cooperation in the political, economic, commercial, cultural and other fields « . While recalling that in 2018 the volume of bilateral trade reached $ 9.1 billion, he said that « Algeria, whose exports to China are growing, has become the 5th largest trading partner in Africa for China ».

« It should also be noted that the two countries have led significant exchanges and cooperation in the cultural and human fields, which has further consolidate the friendship between the two peoples, » he said. He underlined, in this connection, the « excellence » of relations between the two countries for 60 years, established on the principles of « mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, equality, shared prosperity and win-win, « noting that the two countries » have begun sincere and fruitful cooperation, making Sino-Algerian relations exemplary in friendly cooperation () « .

He stressed, in particular, the cooperation between the two countries in the health field, underlining, in this context, that « since 1956, China has made available to Algeria 26 medical teams with about 3400 doctors Chinese, who treated Algerian patients free of charge throughout the national territory « . He said, in this context, that « Chinese medical teams have managed to treat 23.7 million people and participate in the birth of about 1.6 million newborns. » Mr. Li Lianhe also recalled that « in 2014, China and Algeria established the global strategic partnership », making bilateral relations « thus enter a new phase of development », adding that « in the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, in September 2018, the two countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the joint construction of + the Belt and the Silk Road + « .
